WHAT IS EPDM?

ETHYLENE PROPYLENE DIENE MONOMER

EPDM rubber (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer [M-class]) is an elastomer characterized by a wide range of applications. The ‘M’ refers to its classification in ASTM standard D-1418 and the ‘M-class’ includes rubbers having a saturated chain of the polymethylene type.

WHY USE EPDM PROFILES?

EPDM a synthetic rubber used in a range of applications. EPDM is used most commonly used in the construction and automotive industries for various seals due to its excellent resistance to environmental factors such as Ozone, UV and general weathering. Typical applications of EPDM are window and door seals (glazing), waterproofing sheets and electrical gaskets.

TEMPERATURE

Temperature resistance of a rubber is vitally important in applications that have varying temperature ranges. Choosing the incorrect rubber can result in melting, deforming and/or the material becoming brittle, which in turn will affect its physical properties and most likely cause failure.
When compared with other rubber gaskets, EPDM rubber gaskets have significantly better  maximum temperature of 130°C (266°F).

ELONGATION

Elongation is how stretchy a material is and how it performs when being expanded and contracted.

EPDM rubber can  stay flexible up to -10°C which is why it is found in applications in extremely harsh. environments

Although most materials are prone to swelling if exposed to oil for long periods, EPDM has a better resistance to oil and is seen as a more suitable material to use.

If a rubber is to be applied in an application situated in an outdoor environment, the environmental resistance of the rubber needs to be assessed.
Some rubbers are prone to cracking when exposed to Ozone and UV therefore picking the right rubber for outdoor applications is important.
EPDM rubber gaskets have excellent resistance to environmental conditions. EPDM rubbers can withstand general weathering, Ozone and UV making them ideal for outdoor applications.
